"Tariffs Will Remain Until US Withdraws Its Measures"
Canada has decided to impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports worth a total of 155 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 156 trillion won) in response to the US's 25% tariffs.
On the 3rd (local time), according to CNBC and others, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that starting from the 4th, when the US tariffs take effect, retaliatory tariffs of 25% will be imposed on US imports worth 30 billion Canadian dollars.
He added that within 21 days, additional retaliatory tariffs will be applied to US imports worth 125 billion Canadian dollars.
Prime Minister Trudeau explained, "We will maintain the tariffs until the US trade measures are withdrawn," and "We are also actively discussing various non-tariff measures with provincial governments and others."
He continued, "Americans will have to pay more for groceries, gas, and cars because of the US tariffs, and thousands of jobs could be lost," adding, "The tariffs will disrupt what has been an astonishingly successful trade relationship. This is a violation of the trade agreements negotiated during Donald Trump's previous term as US president."
On the same day, President Trump announced that tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, scheduled to take effect from the 4th, will be imposed as planned.
