The Daejeon Fire Headquarters announced that it will intensively implement fire prevention measures for the spring season from March to May.
Of the 4,467 fires that occurred in Daejeon over the past five years, 1,239 happened during the spring, accounting for more than a quarter of all cases. In particular, property damage during spring amounted to 188.2 billion won (80.4% of the total), and there were 79 casualties (13 deaths and 66 injuries).
Accordingly, various safety measures will be implemented to prevent springtime fires.
To prevent fires at construction sites, on-site administrative guidance will be conducted, such as assigning fire watchers during welding and cutting operations.
Additionally, campaigns for fire safety guidance and evacuation plan establishment will be carried out for vulnerable residential facilities such as old apartments, single-family homes, and jjokbangchon (makeshift housing areas).
For facilities vulnerable to evacuation, such as nursing homes and long-term care hospitals, as well as multi-use facilities like jjimjilbang and saunas, fire drills and evacuation training will be conducted to strengthen initial response capabilities.
Kang Daehoon, head of the Daejeon Fire Headquarters, said, "With the dry weather continuing in spring, the risk of large-scale fires and wildfires is increasing. We kindly ask for citizens' special attention and cooperation, such as refraining from littering cigarette butts, being careful when cooking, and prohibiting the burning of trash in areas adjacent to forests."
