Goheung County Wins Grand Prize at Gwangju-Jeonnam Local Government Management Awards

Highly Praised for Administrative Services, Culture and Tourism, Health and Welfare

Goheung County, South Jeolla Province (Governor Gong Youngmin) announced on the 28th that it received the 'Grand Prize' at the 16th Gwangju-Jeonnam Local Autonomy Management Awards ceremony held at Yeomju Gymnasium in Gwangju on the 27th.


The '16th Gwangju-Jeonnam Local Autonomy Management Awards,' hosted by Gwangnam Ilbo and sponsored by Jeollanam-do and Gwangju City, is an event that selects and awards organizations among the 27 cities, counties, and districts in Gwangju and Jeonnam that have contributed to local development and improvement of residents' quality of life through grassroots local autonomy and administrative service enhancement.

Goheung County received excellent evaluations in all five categories?administrative services, culture and tourism, health and welfare, safety and environment, and economic revitalization?earning the honor of the Grand Prize.


In the administrative services category, major achievements included being selected as an 'Outstanding Institution for the 2024 National Happiness Civil Service Office' and receiving the highest grade (SA) in the second-year evaluation of basic local government pledge implementation under the 8th popularly elected administration.


In the culture and tourism category, the county was highly rated for hosting the '100th Anniversary Special Exhibition of Artist Chun Kyungja,' operating the first permanent drone show at Nokdong Port in Goheung among local governments in Jeonnam, and establishing the Goheung Space Aviation Festival and Yuzu Festival as profitable local festivals.


In the health and welfare category, the operation of the only 'zero-waiting senior job program' in Jeonnam, the implementation of the nation's first 'dedicated primary care physician system for seniors,' and the 'denture implant support project for low-income seniors' drew the attention of the judges.


In the safety and environment category, major accomplishments included efforts to improve accessibility through the construction of the Gwangju-Goheung Expressway, Goheung Space Railway, and the four-lane expansion of National Road No. 15 between Goheung and Bongrae, which are considered the three major transportation infrastructures in Goheung.


Especially in the economic revitalization category, the county received the highest marks for achieving $100 million in export sales for two consecutive years through efforts to develop new markets for agricultural and marine products, securing exemption from the preliminary feasibility study for the 460,000-pyeong National Space Launch Vehicle Industrial Complex, and creating financial resources to provide every resident with a 300,000-won livelihood recovery support fund through strong expenditure restructuring such as cutting unnecessary budgets.


Governor Gong Youngmin said, "I consider today’s award as encouragement for the tireless efforts made in all areas of county administration for Goheung’s change and development since the launch of the 8th popularly elected administration," and added, "This year as well, together with over 1,400 public officials, we will do our utmost to bring about changes that our residents can truly feel."
