[Hot Stock] Seegene Rises on News of New Human Coronavirus Discovery

Seegene is showing strong performance. It is interpreted to be influenced by the news of the discovery of a novel human coronavirus that has never been reported before in Korea.

As of 10:01 AM on the 28th, Seegene is trading at 26,200 KRW, up 6.07% compared to the previous day.

According to the industry, Professor Song Jin-won’s research team from the Department of Microbiology at Korea University College of Medicine discovered a novel human coronavirus that had not been previously reported.

The research team analyzed samples from an infant hospitalized with pneumonia symptoms at Korea University Ansan Hospital in 2022 and found a human coronavirus. The study was published in the February issue of the international journal Emerging Microbes and Infections.

According to the research team, the infant showed respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, sputum, and runny nose, along with acute otitis media and abnormal liver function, leading to hospitalization at Korea University Ansan Hospital. Pneumonia was accompanied, and liver function levels were abnormally high. Subsequently, the infant’s liver function and respiratory symptoms improved through conservative treatment, and was discharged after 8 days.

While COVID-19 mainly caused pneumonia, this virus was accompanied not only by pneumonia but also by abnormal liver function.

The research team stated that this virus is more closely related to the rodent-derived alphacoronavirus (AcCoV-JC34) found in China and Korea than to existing human coronaviruses, but the infection route is unclear, and further research is needed to determine the possibility of human-to-human transmission.

Meanwhile, Seegene is a company engaged in molecular diagnostics that detect the causes of diseases through DNA and RNA analysis. It recorded high performance with sales of diagnostic kits during the COVID-19 pandemic.
