Increase in Teenagers Using 'Generative AI'... Decline in Educational Experience ↓

67.9% of Middle and High School Students Say "I Have Used It"
Responses Indicating Experience with Related Education Are 'Below Average'
"Need to Expand Education and Create Guidelines"

As generative AI technology has become more accessible, it was found that two out of three adolescents have experience using generative AI. However, there is little experience with related education, leading to suggestions that educational guidelines and directives at the central government level are necessary.

According to the report "Study on Adolescents' Use of Generative AI and Literacy Improvement Measures" by the Korea Youth Policy Institute on the 28th, a survey of 5,778 middle and high school students showed that 67.9% of the students responded that they had used generative AI. This means that more than two-thirds of the students have experience using generative AI such as ChatGPT.

A high school student who participated in the survey said, "In a school book report contest, I used ChatGPT to outline the structure of the writing and supplement my lack of vocabulary, then added details and reviewed it again before submitting, and I won first place," adding, "The school also encouraged the use of ChatGPT."

While the number of students using generative AI in various ways is expected to increase, experience with related education was low. When students were asked about their experience with generative AI education on a 4-point scale, the scores for education on ▲operating principles (2.25) ▲usage methods (2.24) ▲personal information and copyright infringement (2.33) ▲bias and error discrimination (2.19) were all below the average score of 2.5 points.

In Japan, the central government developed and distributed a standard guideline for generative AI use education in schools nationwide. The education included appropriate and inappropriate use cases of generative AI. In South Korea, some city and provincial education offices have created guidelines for generative AI use, but there are no directives at the central level.

The research team stated, "It was found that experience with generative AI-related education is low, and it is rare to have encountered educational guidelines within schools," adding, "There is a need to expand generative AI-related education and create guidelines that include potential issues and precautions when using generative AI in education."
