Dairy Policy Research Institute: "3 out of 10 Consumers Reduce Milk Consumption"

Results of the '2024 Milk and Dairy Products Consumption Behavior Survey'

Among domestic consumers, 3 out of 10 have reduced their milk consumption in the past year.


The Korea Dairy & Beef Cattle Association's Dairy Policy Research Institute announced the results of the '2024 Milk and Dairy Products Consumption Behavior Survey' on the 27th, which surveyed 1,000 people aged 14 to 68 from June 21 to November 15 last year.

31.7% of respondents said they reduced their milk consumption in the past year. The percentage of those who reduced milk consumption decreased by 3.4 percentage points from 35.1% in the 2022 survey to last year.


The proportion of respondents who increased their milk consumption over the year was 19.5%, up 1.4 percentage points from the previous survey.


Individually, 77.2% said they drink milk at least once a week, and 63.8% chose 'drink plain milk' as their preferred way of consumption.


The main places for purchasing milk were large supermarkets (55.4%), supermarkets (24.2%), and online shopping malls (9.2%), in that order.


Awareness of the K-Milk (MILK) certification mark was 53.1%. 50.5% said they have tried imported sterilized milk. Among those with drinking experience, 38.6% responded that 'imported sterilized milk has less flavor than domestic milk,' and 37.3% said 'the shelf life is too long, raising safety concerns.' Additionally, 27.6% answered that 'it is less fresh than domestic milk.'


Among cheese and yogurt, natural cheese (41.6%) and drinkable liquid yogurt (39.2%) were the most commonly purchased, respectively.
