US Senate Confirms Key Trump Tariff War Figure, USTR Representative Greer

Involved in the U.S.-China Trade War

Jamison Greer, the nominee for the United States Trade Representative (USTR) who will lead negotiations with other countries in the 'tariff war' triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

US Senate Confirms Key Trump Tariff War Figure, USTR Representative Greer

On the 26th (local time), the U.S. Senate held a vote on Greer's confirmation in a plenary session, passing it with 56 votes in favor and 43 against.

Nominee Greer served as chief of staff to former USTR Representative Robert Lighthizer, who was known as President Trump's trade advisor. Since Lighthizer took office as the USTR during Trump's first term (2017?2021), Greer, as his chief of staff, was deeply involved in the trade war against China, including the imposition of high tariffs. He also played a role in replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the USMCA during Trump's first term.

Greer has shown a tough stance on reciprocal tariffs mentioned by President Trump, especially regarding non-tariff barriers imposed by trade partners on U.S. products.

At a Senate Finance Committee confirmation hearing held on the 6th, Greer strongly warned of a firm response to moves to regulate monopolies of online platform companies in countries like South Korea, which affect the interests of U.S. companies, stating that such actions are "unacceptable." He also said, "We are having domestic discussions on how to regulate digital trade and technology companies," and argued, "We should not leave regulation of our companies to other countries such as the EU or Brazil."
