Gumi City Aims to Foster Local Culture and Arts

The ‘Daehanminguk Jeongsu Grand Art Competition,’ Gumi City's representative art contest in Gyeongbuk Province, has elevated its status by restoring the Presidential Award after seven years.

Restoration of the Presidential Award After 7 Years... Strengthening the Prestige of the 'Daehanminguk Jeongsu Grand Exhibition' On the 26th, Kim Jang-ho, Mayor of Gumi City, stated that it is meaningful that the Presidential Award is being presented again as the Korea Water Purification Exhibition has established itself as a representative art exhibition in our country.

On the 26th, Gumi City announced that the 2025 Daehanminguk Jeongsu Grand Art Competition has been selected as a recipient for the government award category ‘Presidential Award’ in the visual arts competition.

The city applied for the reinstatement of the Presidential Award to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism last November, and after a rigorous review, it was finalized on the 20th. The Presidential Award had been given for ten years starting in 2009 but was excluded after 2019 and has now been restored.

The Daehanminguk Jeongsu Grand Art Competition, which began with its first event in 2000, is a nationwide art contest now in its 26th edition this year. It is held annually to honor the lives and achievements of former President Park Jeonghee and First Lady Yuk Youngsoo, and to discover and nurture outstanding talents in visual arts fields such as fine art, calligraphy, literati painting, and photography.

Each year, more than 2,000 works are submitted, with artists from across the country participating in high-level competition.

This year’s competition will begin with an operations committee meeting in May, followed by submission and judging of works, and will culminate in an awards ceremony and exhibition in November. The restoration of the Presidential Award is expected to encourage the submission of even more diverse and excellent works.

Kim Jangho, Mayor of Gumi City, said, “It is meaningful that the Daehanminguk Jeongsu Grand Art Competition, which has established itself as a leading national art contest, will once again present the Presidential Award. We will continue to do our best to promote the development of the Jeongsu Grand Art Competition and revitalize local culture and arts.”
