"Sosu Seowon Pakeok Debate"
Exhibition from March 1 to May 25
The Sosu Museum in Yeongju, Gyeongbuk, will hold the monthly artifact exhibition "The Sosu Seowon Pakeok (罷格) Debate" from March 1 to May 25.
The "Monthly Artifact Exhibition" is a program planned quarterly (March, June, September, December) based on artifacts held by the Sosu Museum selected by the curator, linked to historical events. This exhibition is set up in the first-floor exhibition hall of the Sosu Museum main building, designed to allow visitors to deeply explore the historical significance through the artifacts.
This exhibition introduces the "Changseokjip (蒼石集)," an artifact held by the Sosu Museum, under the theme of the "Sosu Seowon Pakeok (罷格) Debate," reflecting the latest academic research achievements.
The Pakeok debate was triggered by Lee Jun (李埈), who served as the magistrate of Punggi County in the early 17th century, arguing that the admission regulations of Sosu Seowon should be revised. He claimed that the existing admission criteria, centered on those who passed the state examination, were too restrictive and that educational opportunities should be provided to more talented individuals.
In his collection of writings, "Changseokjip (蒼石集)," Lee Jun detailed this position and the necessity for revision in the "Yubaekundongwonjangmun (諭白雲洞院長文)," emphasizing the expansion of the Seowon's educational role.
A curator at the Sosu Museum said, "Starting with this exhibition, we hope to sequentially show the process of the Joseon Dynasty Seowon view changing 'from a place of examination achievements (科業之所) to a place of Confucian learning (道學之所)' through the case of Sosu Seowon, and we ask for your great interest."
The permanent exhibition hall of the Sosu Museum main building began remodeling in 2021 to introduce new exhibition techniques and replace exhibits due to storyline changes, completing construction in July 2024.
