Gangdong-gu Mayor Lee Su-hee Visits Dunchon Elementary and Wirye Elementary Ahead of Reopening

Walking the School Routes to Ensure Student Safety

Lee Su-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, Seoul, visited Seoul Dunchon Elementary School and Seoul Wirye Elementary School within the Olympic Park Foreon Complex on the 25th, ahead of their reopening on the 4th of next month, walking the students' commuting routes to directly assess the pedestrian environment.

Dunchon Elementary and Wirye Elementary were closed in 2018 due to the reconstruction of Dunchon Jugong Apartments. They began reconstruction under the Old School Space Restructuring Project and are scheduled to reopen this March. As construction is still ongoing with only a few days left before the start of the school year, residents of the complex and surrounding parents are greatly concerned.

On this day, Mayor Lee inspected the overall school facilities by visiting classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and walking the surrounding commuting routes used by students. He met with the principals of both schools and pledged full cooperation to ensure a safe learning environment and proper meal provision, while urging the schools to prioritize student safety above all else.

Gangdong-gu is making efforts to create a safe commuting environment for students by assigning five Green Traffic Safety Guardians to each school on school days and expanding the designated child protection zones around the schools ahead of the reopening.

The district has formed a special task force (TF team) to normalize the Dunchon Jugong Housing Reconstruction Project, including the smooth progress of the elementary schools within the complex, holding multiple working-level meetings to monitor construction progress. Additionally, to secure safe commuting routes for students, the district held working meetings with officials from the Gangdong-Songpa Office of Education at all schools before the pre-move-in inspection period of Olympic Park Foreon, continuously urging related agencies for timely completion.

Meanwhile, Gangdong-gu plans to conduct on-site inspections of commuting routes for five elementary schools, including Gangsol Elementary, which operates school buses, early next month as the new school term begins.

Mayor Lee Su-hee said, “After personally inspecting the school sites, I am very concerned whether the construction will be completed with only a few days left before the start of the school year. We will do our best to fulfill the district’s role to ensure the schools can open normally, and even after the start of the term, we will continuously monitor the educational environment to guarantee students’ safe and comfortable school life.”
