Gyeonggi Province inspected workplaces with fire and explosion hazards and identified 11 violations.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 23rd that from January 2 to February 14, it conducted safety inspections on 100 hazardous material handling workplaces with high fire and explosion risks during winter, confirming 11 violations including unauthorized hazardous material storage.
This inspection is the third phase following the first phase inspection of 48 lithium-handling workplaces and the second phase inspection of 100 hazardous material handling workplaces other than lithium, conducted to prevent recurrence of similar accidents like the ‘Hwaseong Factory Fire’ in June last year, which caused multiple casualties.
The inspections were jointly carried out by the ‘Hazardous Material Handling Workplace Safety Inspection and Expert Advisory Group,’ composed of three-person teams including civilian experts on hazardous chemicals and the Fire and Disaster Headquarters.
Among the 11 violations detected, three cases such as unauthorized hazardous material storage and violations of important hazardous material storage standards were booked for violations of the Hazardous Materials Management Act, while eight cases including non-compliance with hazardous material prevention regulations were fined.
Gyeonggi Province also provided a total of 939 expert consultations, including 213 cases of chemical accident prevention and response guidance, 203 cases of facility improvement guidance, 135 cases of safety equipment guidance, 255 cases of laws and systems guidance, and 133 cases of support project guidance.
Through the combined inspections of phases 1 to 3, Gyeonggi Province plans to encourage facility improvements at workplaces with insufficient safety management and facilities by linking with the province’s ‘Hazardous Chemical Safety Facility Installation and Improvement Support Project.’
Cha Seong-su, Director of the Climate, Environment and Energy Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Gyeonggi Province will continuously conduct inspections by permanently operating the ‘Hazardous Material Handling Workplace Safety Inspection and Expert Advisory Group’ to ensure the safety management of small and medium-sized workplaces and will continue to strive for the safety of residents."
