Busan Without Snow, Is It Real?... Busan City Wins Record Number of Medals at Winter Sports Festival

250 Busan Athletes Achieve 5th Place Overall for 18 Consecutive Years

Busan secured the highest number of medals ever at the National Winter Sports Festival. Busan's sports scene, which lacks 'snow,' is writing an exciting new chapter.

Busan City (Mayor Park Hyung-jun) announced on the 23rd that it achieved 5th place overall for the 18th consecutive year at the 106th National Winter Sports Festival, which concluded on the 21st. It also set a new record by winning the most medals in history.

At this event, Busan won a total of 47 medals, including 19 gold, 16 silver, and 12 bronze, scoring 491 points overall.

This far surpassed the previous record of 35 medals set at the 104th National Winter Sports Festival. The 19 gold medals also more than doubled the 8 gold medals won at the 105th National Winter Sports Festival, marking an unprecedented achievement.

Busan solidified its 5th place overall by winning 41 medals (18 gold, 13 silver, 10 bronze) in skiing events alone.

Cross-country skier Jeon Jun-sang won five titles in the ▲Classic 5 km ▲Free 10 km ▲Combined ▲20 km relay ▲Sprint 1.2 km events. Additionally, alpine skier Choi Beom-geun, cross-country skier Heo Bu-kyung with four titles each, and cross-country skier Lee Ui-jin with three titles, among others, showcased multiple championship wins, demonstrating the best performance ever by the Busan team.

The 106th National Winter Sports Festival was held from February 18 to 21 in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. Busan City dispatched a total of 250 members (172 athletes and 78 officials) to compete in six sports: ice skating, skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, curling, and mountaineering.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun of Busan said, “Despite the very challenging training environment and geographical conditions for winter sports, our athletes delivered their best performances and achieved the best results in history. I sincerely thank the team.” He added, “This year marks the hosting of the 106th National Sports Festival in Busan and the 2025 World Anti-Doping Agency General Assembly, large-scale domestic and international sports events, so the results of this winter sports festival will be an even greater source of strength.”
