Kim Yungrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, stated on the 20th, "We will pursue seven major visions to establish Mokpo as a key city in Northeast Asia for the new maritime era."
Governor Kim made this announcement at the Mokpo City Policy Vision Tour held at the Mokpo International Football Center Multipurpose Gymnasium on the same day.
Attending the Policy Vision Tour were Park Hongryul, Mayor of Mokpo; Park Moonok, Jeon Kyungseon, Cho Oukhyeon, Choi Seonguk, and Choi Junghoon, members of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Council; Jo Seongo, Chairman of Mokpo City Council; and about 200 citizens.
At this event, Governor Kim said, "Mokpo, once one of Korea's three major ports, is now entering a new golden age with significant achievements in offshore wind power, maritime and fisheries, shipbuilding, and education. The revival of Mokpo is a great driving force for the development of Jeollanam-do. We will actively support opening a new era for Mokpo as a global maritime economic city, surpassing the glory of the port's opening in 1987."
The Jeonnam Research Institute, based on Mokpo's development potential, presented the slogan "Restoring the reputation of Korea's three major ports - Mokpo, the Northeast Asian gateway connecting past, future, and the world!" and proposed seven major visions for the region's future development.
The seven major visions are: ▲ Mokpo Romantic Port Three Major Renovation Projects ▲ Opening the era of 20 million Mokpo tourists from around the world ▲ Korea's representative cultural port city embracing the peace spirit of Kim Daejung ▲ Eco-friendly marine new industry hub leading the Northeast Asian maritime economy ▲ Bringing the taste of the sea to the world! Achieving 1 trillion won in Mokpo seafood exports ▲ Major transformation of land, sea, and air transportation networks as the gateway to the Pan-Pacific ▲ New regional development model: Southwest Economic Community.
Specifically, policies for the three major renovation projects include the creation of complex cultural spaces, renovation of Mokpo Station and relocation of railway facilities, and development of eco-friendly new towns focused on residential and educational functions.
To usher in the era of 20 million Mokpo tourists, policies such as establishing a global maritime tourism landmark, creating a gourmet and sports tourism city linked to mega event achievements, and expanding stay-type integrated marine leisure tourism infrastructure were proposed.
Policies for the cultural port city embracing the peace spirit of Kim Daejung include establishing the Kim Daejung World Peace Park utilizing AI technology, building and globalizing the Jeonnam Sumuk Biennale Art Center, and creating a Northeast Asian tri-nation cultural complex zone linked to the modern historical and cultural area.
To become an eco-friendly marine new industry hub, the proposals included creating an offshore wind power equipment cluster, establishing an eco-friendly repair smart yard, nurturing local companies linked to the Coast Guard maintenance center, creating a special zone for R&D throughout the lifecycle of eco-friendly ships, and building ecosystems for eco-friendly, leisure, and parts/equipment industries.
Policies to achieve 1 trillion won in seafood exports include establishing an export base for the gim industry, building a global distribution platform for processed seafood, setting up a Mokpo fish cake HACCP processing plant, and creating a Blue Food Tech business platform combining AI and big data.
For a major transformation of land, sea, and air transportation networks, policies include establishing an advanced integrated logistics system in the southwest region, building a southwest logistics platform, opening a Korea-China ferry route, introducing the Jeonnam-type tram, constructing the Daebul Industrial Complex Bridge, and building National Road No. 77.
For the Southwest Economic Community, policies such as phased cooperation, connection, and integration; expanding the roles and functions of the integrated special city; creating a southwest marine healing tourism belt; and hosting international cooperative events in the southwest coastal area were also proposed.
