Support for Residents Aged 65 and Over as "Senior Citizens," Not Just the Elderly
The 'Ordinance on Supporting Senior Citizens in Chungcheongnam-do,' proposed by Assemblyman Ahn Jangheon (Asan 5, Democratic Party of Korea) of the Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Council, passed the review at the 2nd plenary session of the 357th extraordinary meeting held on the 19th.
'Senior citizens' refers to residents of Chungcheongnam-do aged 65 and over who, based on their wisdom and experience, participate in activities for the community and communicate with 'junior citizens.'
This ordinance was proposed to provide an institutional basis for senior citizens to actively engage in social activities in various fields such as welfare, education, culture, arts, and sports, thereby contributing to the improvement of senior welfare and the development of the community.
The ordinance on supporting senior citizens includes: ▲ the governor's responsibilities regarding support for senior citizen activities ▲ establishment of a basic plan for senior citizen projects ▲ support for research, education, and community participation projects for senior citizens ▲ development and support of senior citizen programs.
Ahn Jangheon stated, "Chungcheongnam-do already entered a super-aged society in 2023, and according to Statistics Korea, it is projected that by 2035, 30.2% of the population will be seniors, and by 2045, this will rise to 37.8%. We must support seniors not as passive recipients of care, but as 'senior citizens' equipped with wisdom and experience, so that they can actively participate in the community and demonstrate their abilities and experience."
