Numerous Complaints About Ground Subsidence and Building Cracks
Baek Jonghan, a member of the Gwangju Seo-gu Council (Hwajeong 3-dong, Hwajeong 4-dong, Pungam-dong), delivered a '5-minute free speech' during the 2nd plenary session of the 328th temporary meeting on the 20th, addressing the topics of ▲issues related to the construction of Urban Railway Line 2 ▲and requesting Seo-gu Office to establish countermeasures for population decline.
Baek stated that due to the construction of Urban Railway Line 2, residents have filed complaints about ground subsidence and cracks in buildings, as well as road closures, surface irregularities causing traffic congestion and vehicle damage. Additionally, nearby businesses are suffering losses due to restricted customer access. He urged prompt action to resolve these complaints, restore and repave roads, and secure access to and from the commercial areas.
Baek also pointed out in a '5-minute free speech' last October that “Seo-gu’s total fertility rate and population policy require urgent measures,” adding, “Seo-gu ranked lowest among the five districts of Gwangju in total fertility rate from 2020 to 2023.”
He continued, “Seo-gu’s population has decreased by more than 10% over the past decade, from 310,000 in 2014 to 296,000 in 2020, and to 287,000 in 2022,” emphasizing, “Comprehensive measures to increase the population, including attracting young adults and foreigners, are urgently needed.”
