Establishing Regulations for the Installation of Safety Equipment in Tunnels
The South Chungcheong Provincial Council has enacted an ordinance to strengthen safety management of road tunnels in order to prevent potentially serious accidents.
The council announced that the "Ordinance on the Safety Management of Road Tunnels in Chungcheongnam-do," proposed by Councilor Jeon Ikhyeon (Seocheon 1, Democratic Party of Korea), was passed at the second plenary session of the 357th extraordinary meeting held on the afternoon of the 19th.
Councilor Jeon pointed out, "While road tunnels offer the advantage of shortening travel distances, their dark and enclosed nature means that accidents can easily lead to large-scale disasters. Therefore, a prompt response system must be established."
The ordinance, which passed the council's review, includes measures to prevent major accidents in road tunnels, such as installing fire detectors, emergency broadcasting systems, guidance signs, emergency parking areas, and fire extinguishing equipment tailored to the characteristics of each tunnel. It also mandates the installation of barrier systems at tunnel entrances and anti-icing measures to prevent additional damage from accidents.
Jeon Ikhyeon stated, "Accidents in tunnels can turn into major disasters within just a few seconds. Through this ordinance, I hope the administration will accurately assess the current status of tunnels in the province and establish appropriate countermeasures so that residents can pass through tunnels with peace of mind."
