'Cheonwon-ui Achimbap' at 200 Universities This Year... Breakfast Provided During Winter Vacation

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 17th that it has selected 200 universities to participate in the '1,000 Won Breakfast' program, which aims to provide quality breakfast to university students and promote rice consumption among young people.

The 1,000 Won Breakfast program is a project where the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs supports 2,000 won per student, and local governments and schools cover the remaining cost so that students can have breakfast for 1,000 won.

This year, 200 universities nationwide, including 79 universities in the metropolitan area and 34 in the Chungcheong region, are participating in the 1,000 Won Breakfast program. A ministry official explained, "This year, the project was launched early to provide warm breakfasts even during the winter vacation (January to February). Ten universities, including Seoul National University and Chungnam National University, have been providing breakfast to students since January."

Last year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs made efforts to improve the quality of meal plans by increasing government support rates (from 1,000 won to 2,000 won per person), introducing an ombudsman, and promoting excellent meal plans. As a result, universities showed increased interest in participating in the program, and students' awareness of the importance of breakfast has improved, showing positive outcomes.

Choi Myung-cheol, Director of Food Policy at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, said, "Unlike previous years, this year the project was launched early so that students can benefit from the 1,000 Won Breakfast even during vacation periods. We will continue to actively reflect the opinions of students and university campuses and conduct linked inspections with consumer groups and meal plans to ensure that more students receive quality meals."
