Ordinance Amendment Passes City Council
Improved Access to Administrative Services
Yurim-dong in Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, where the population has rapidly increased due to successive urban development projects, will be divided into Yurim 1-dong and Yurim 2-dong.
Yongin City announced on the 14th that the amendment to the "Ordinance on the Names and Jurisdictional Areas of Legal Dong and Ri," which includes this content, passed the plenary session of the city council's extraordinary meeting on the same day. Accordingly, Yurim-dong will be subdivided into Yurim 1-dong and Yurim 2-dong in July.
This subdivision comes as about 9,000 people moved in due to apartment occupancy following urban development projects such as the Bopyeong District, Jindeok District, Yubang District, and Gorim District, causing the population to exceed 50,000 last October. As of the end of last year, the population of Yurim-dong was recorded at 51,752.
With the subdivision confirmed, the city plans to reflect the necessary budget in the first supplementary budget in April and rename the "Yurim-dong Administrative Welfare Center" to "Yurim 1-dong Administrative Welfare Center" in July, while opening a new "Yurim 2-dong Administrative Welfare Center" to start operations.
Yurim 1-dong and Yurim 2-dong will be divided administratively based on the Gyeongan Stream. "Yurim 1-dong" covers an area of 7 km² and manages Yubang-dong Yubang 1 to 6 and 10 to 15 neighborhoods. As of the end of last year, 6,291 households and 13,051 people live there. "Yurim 2-dong" covers 6.5 km² and is responsible for Yubang-dong Yubang 7 to 9 and Gorim-dong Gorim 1 to 26 neighborhoods. It manages 14,681 households and 37,931 people.
With the subdivision of Yurim-dong, the city’s administrative districts will be reorganized from 4 eup, 3 myeon, and 31 dong to 4 eup, 3 myeon, and 32 dong.
Earlier, the city began the subdivision process in earnest from the second half of last year due to population growth. Mayor Lee Sang-il held a meeting with residents at the Yurim-dong Administrative Welfare Center at the end of July last year to announce the related plans.
At the end of August that year, the city collected opinions on the names of the subdivision target areas and the boundary criteria of legal dong through resident briefings and surveys. Then, in September, after establishing the "Basic Plan for Administrative District Adjustment (draft)," the "Yongin City Place Name Committee" decided to name the administrative dong "Yurim 2-dong."
The city expects that this subdivision will improve residents’ use of and access to the administrative welfare centers and enable efficient provision of administrative services closely linked to residents’ lives, such as welfare services and urban civil complaint resolution.
Mayor Lee said, "With this subdivision, city officials will do their best to provide more thorough administrative services to local residents," adding, "We will continue to strive to establish an administrative system and improve service quality befitting a metropolitan city in the future."
