Hong Jun-pyo: "If Yoon is impeached, calls for 'Constitutional Court abolition' will arise along with constitutional amendment"

"Pro-Impeachment Rebels Must Be Expelled from Politics"

Hong Jun-pyo: "If Yoon is impeached, calls for 'Constitutional Court abolition' will arise along with constitutional amendment" Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu Metropolitan City. Provided by Daegu City

Hong Jun-pyo, the mayor of Daegu, stated that "the illegal detention of President Yoon Seok-yeol by the prosecution and the unfair judgment by the Constitutional Court must be condemned," and predicted that calls for constitutional amendment and the abolition of the Constitutional Court will arise.

On the 13th, Mayor Hong wrote on his social media service (SNS), "There were two major issues in this national turmoil: martial law and impeachment." He said, "I have consistently said that martial law was inappropriate, but I opposed impeachment," adding, "Although martial law was inappropriate, it falls under the president's constitutional emergency powers, so it cannot be considered illegal, and impeaching on that basis is unfair."

He continued, "In particular, the prosecution's atrocities?framing a non-existent charge of rebellion, arresting and detaining with an illegal warrant, and prosecuting while the detention period had expired?cannot help but be condemned," and predicted, "The unfair judgment process of the Constitutional Court will also raise questions about its existence during future constitutional amendment discussions." He added, "Since the impeachment of Park Geun-hye was concluded as illegal and led to her removal, if the same situation occurs again, there may be calls during constitutional amendment to abolish the Constitutional Court and increase the number of Supreme Court justices by four to establish a constitutional adjudication division within the Supreme Court."

He also stated, "However, above all, the rebellion within our party is the problem," and claimed, "No one supported martial law, but there are some rebels who supported impeachment. These individuals will find it difficult to continue in politics within our party." Furthermore, he concluded, "Those who waver like fragile willows in the wind, constantly shifting their stance and watching public opinion?these 'ganjaemi'?will inevitably be expelled from politics just as those who led Park Geun-hye's impeachment were expelled. The world is truly a strange place."

Earlier, since the impeachment procedure against President Yoon began in December last year, Mayor Hong has criticized pro-impeachment members within the People Power Party by comparing them to 'lemmings.' Lemmings are rodents known for their collective behavior. At that time, through SNS, he said, "Lemmings are just lemmings, and traitors will never escape that stigma," and warned, "Can we continue politics with these immature rebel lemmings who might betray us again? Lemmings who support impeachment should leave the party."
