Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province is strengthening crackdowns on abandoned vehicles.
The city has moved away from a passive crackdown method relying on civil complaints and has organized its own enforcement teams by matching each administrative district with a crackdown team on a one-to-one basis, initiating Road Checking.
In the first half of this year, a pilot operation will be conducted once a week targeting three districts: Simgok 2-dong, Seonggok-dong, and Sinheung-dong. Additionally, the crackdown areas and operational methods will be improved and changed every six months to efficiently address blind spots for abandoned vehicles.
Last year, the city received a total of 1,207 reports of abandoned vehicles, with motorcycles accounting for 560 cases. Among these, 67.5% (378 cases) of the motorcycles were confirmed to have unknown owners.
The city has improved procedures to enable prompt voluntary removal and towing by attaching notices and making public announcements regarding motorcycles with unidentified owners. Furthermore, to create a citizen-centered traffic convenience, the city plans to actively clear vehicles that have been left without justifiable reasons for a certain period on roads, parking lots, or others' land.
A Bucheon city official stated, "Through proactive crackdowns and procedural improvements on abandoned vehicles, we will reduce citizen inconvenience and strive to secure parking spaces and improve the urban landscape."
