Toss operator Viva Republica announced on the 12th that it will launch the FacePay service. This service allows payment through facial recognition after pre-registering a face and payment method.
It will debut next month at some CU and GS25 stores. Seven Eleven will open the service in the second quarter. Users who have registered their face on the Toss app make payments by having their face recognized by a dedicated terminal at the checkout counter.
Toss explained that FacePay has high accuracy and fast speed. It performs facial authentication with 99.99% accuracy in just one second. Once a face is registered on the Toss application, users can pay using the selected method among credit card, debit card, or bank account.
They also stated that an advanced security system is in place. All data related to FacePay is encrypted and managed on a separate server. During the facial recognition stage, fake faces such as photos or videos are filtered out. The anti-face forgery technology "Liveness" is applied. A 24-hour Fraud Detection System (FDS) operates to detect and handle fraudulent transactions.
Toss plans to focus on expanding FacePay-enabled partners starting with convenience stores, then movie theaters, cafes, and more.
A Toss official said, "We expect FacePay to provide users with an innovative payment experience," and added, "We will strive to expand payment locations to make facial payment a part of everyday life."
Toss, CU, and GS25 began testing with employees at some stores starting today. Toss is conducting pre-verification procedures by utilizing facial authentication technology at its headquarters and in-house cafes.
