Most of the 195 parties that signed the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change had not submitted new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by the deadline of the 10th (local time).
According to Yonhap News and foreign media, only 10 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Brazil, had submitted their NDCs by that day. Brazil is the host country of this year's UN Climate Change Summit. Although the United States announced its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement shortly after President Donald Trump's inauguration, former President Joe Biden confirmed and announced a target last December to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 61-66% of 2005 levels by 2035.
Most countries, including China, identified as the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, as well as India and the European Union (EU), did not submit their NDCs. South Korea is also not on the list of submitting countries.
Local media pointed out that the greenhouse gas emissions of countries that missed the NDC submission deadline account for 83% of the world's total.
NDCs are part of the Paris Agreement, which commits countries to submit plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions every five years. Simon Stiell, Secretary-General of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said in a speech on the 6th, "The majority of countries have announced they will submit new plans this year," and urged, "Plans must be submitted by September at the latest."
