Executive Order Halts U.S. Aid on the 7th
Did Musk, Born in South Africa, Influence the Decision?
U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed the complete suspension of support for South Africa.
On the 9th (local time), President Trump stated on his social networking service (SNS) Truth Social that "large-scale human rights violations visible to everyone are occurring in South Africa," and added, "The United States will not tolerate this and will take action."
He said, "South Africa is confiscating land and treating certain groups of people very badly," calling it "a bad situation that the radical left-wing media does not want to mention." He emphasized, "All support to South Africa will be suspended until further notice."
Earlier, on the 7th, President Trump signed an executive order to completely halt U.S. government aid to South Africa. He claimed that the South African government implemented racially discriminatory land confiscation policies that oppressed white people and attacked U.S. allies by filing a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The issue arose after the South African government enacted a law allowing the expropriation of agricultural real estate owned by Afrikaners, a group of Dutch settlers who migrated in the 17th century. President Trump also signed an executive order supporting the entry and resettlement of South African whites in the United States.
Local U.S. media suggest that Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and a close confidant of President Trump known as his "First Buddy," who was born in South Africa, may have influenced this decision. CEO Musk argues that the South African government's measures constitute racial discrimination infringing on the property rights of whites.
The New York Times (NYT) reported, "Musk, who was born and raised in South Africa, has been a fierce critic of that government," and added, "It is unclear whether Trump's interest in South Africa is currently influenced by Musk, who is one of his close advisors." The article also stated, "For the Afrikaners, who make up about 4% of the population, Trump's actions represent the culmination of years of international lobbying efforts."
