No. 1 in Honam for Regional Economic Power and Resident Vitality
Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 6th that it ranked 23rd out of 159 basic local governments nationwide, scoring 41.6 points in the '2024 Regional Development Index (RDI)' released by the Korea Rural Economic Institute.
The 'Regional Development Index (RDI)' is an indicator developed by the Korea Rural Economic Institute to comprehensively evaluate the level of development and potential of regions. It analyzes regional competitiveness and residents' quality of life based on four major sectors?living services (residential), regional economic power (workplace), leisure space (recreation), and resident vitality (community)?and 21 detailed categories, and is announced every two years.
In this evaluation of 159 basic local governments, Gwangyang City ranked 17th nationwide in the regional economic power sector and 13th nationwide in the resident vitality sector, taking the top spot in the Honam region for both sectors.
Furthermore, thanks to its strong performance in these two sectors, Gwangyang City also ranked 23rd in the overall Regional Development Index, significantly widening the gap with other local governments in Jeollanam-do and securing the top position in the Honam region.
This result demonstrates that Gwangyang City has achieved balanced growth in both economic and community development. The city's achievement is particularly noteworthy given that 16 of the top 25 local governments nationwide are concentrated in the Gyeonggi-do area. After ranking 28th nationwide in 2016 and consistently maintaining a position within the top 30, Gwangyang City has now climbed to 23rd nationwide.
Mayor Jung Inhwa stated, "This achievement is a valuable result created by the continuous cooperation and support of our citizens," adding, "We will continue to pursue policies for sustainable development and improvement of citizens' quality of life to make Gwangyang City a place where people want to live for a lifetime."
