Centered on global policy trends and the role of local governments, the forum titled "Sustainable Development and Local Governments" was attended by Mayor Lee Kang-deok and senior officials, discussing the roles local governments must play for sustainable development.


Park Yeon-hee, who gave the lecture, reexamined the concept of sustainable development, shared global policy trends, and presented concrete cases and methodologies on how local governments can contribute to change.


She also explained strategies and implementation plans for local governments to respond to the climate crisis, proposing policy directions by discussing policies and programs that Pohang City can adopt to tackle climate change.


Park Yeon-hee said, "The role of local governments is becoming more important than ever to address the climate crisis and achieve sustainable development," adding, "I hope Pohang City grows into a sustainable city that leads responsible local actions in connection with the international community, with the attitude that local practices can change the world."

ICLEI, the Global Network of Local Governments, is an international organization founded in 1990 under the sponsorship of the UN, linking local and global sustainable development efforts.


Currently, over 2,600 local governments from 131 countries are members, and in South Korea, 14 metropolitan governments and 45 basic local governments are actively participating. Pohang City joined as an ICLEI member city in 2015.


Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, "Pohang City has continuously strived to transition to future energy industries and leap forward as a green ecological city," adding, "We will continue to devote ourselves to developing sustainable policies to ensure the city develops in harmony with the environment and economy."
