Established in the AI Convergence Complex, Service to Launch in the Second Half of the Year
Leading the Development and Testing of Level 4 Autonomous Driving
The largest autonomous driving simulator in Korea has been established in Gwangju. The driving simulator, located in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Convergence Complex, is expected to officially launch in the second half of this year and play a leading role as an essential testbed for performance evaluation and development of autonomous vehicles.
According to the city on the 5th, the largest large-scale driving simulator in Korea, which will lead the fostering of the future vehicle industry and support for autonomous driving technology demonstration, has been built in the Advanced District 3 AI Convergence Complex and will begin official service in the second half of this year.
A large driving simulator is an advanced device that allows drivers to board a vehicle and experience a variety of real-world driving situations in virtual reality, enabling the development and verification of autonomous driving functions. It is part of the AI Demonstration Infrastructure Construction Project under the "AI-Centered Industrial Convergence Complex Development" initiative, and is one of 77 demonstration devices (25 for automobiles, 26 for healthcare, and 26 for energy). Through high-performance driving simulators and linked simulations, various Level 4 (Lv.4) autonomous driving verifications can be conducted in a single virtual road environment.
Installation was completed last December at the AI Convergence Complex Demonstration Building, and system stabilization work, including operational training and precision test runs, is underway until March.
Choi Taejo, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Industry Office, said, "The establishment of this large-scale driving simulator will be an important milestone for Gwangju to lead the future vehicle industry and emerge as a representative AI city. By providing essential infrastructure for the development of autonomous vehicles, it will serve as a foundation for companies and institutions to develop innovative technologies and secure global competitiveness."
Meanwhile, information regarding the use of demonstration equipment can be found on the website of the Artificial Intelligence Industry Convergence Project Group.
