"It started as a rebellion and has split into a state of civil war"
"To achieve victory, we must join hands with more forces"
After impeachment, the Democratic Party failed to meet public expectations
Former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said on the 5th that a plan is needed to form a ‘broad coalition’ to unite those who share the intention of impeaching President Yoon Suk-yeol. He emphasized the need to join hands with ‘more forces’ to unify the divided nation.
Appearing on CBS Radio that day, Kim said, "Our political landscape itself is sharply divided. It started as a rebellion, but in fact, it is so divided that it can be called a civil war," adding, "Based on our political history, the side that unites with more forces has always won. This time, when a broad coalition encompassing all forces walking the path of impeachment together is formed, South Korea can be reborn." He proposed broad coalition politics among forces supporting impeachment beyond the framework of the Democratic Party.
He said, "Starting with creating a new social consensus on constitutional amendment, we need to rebound this stagnation in our entire economy and industry, which many citizens fear," and added, "A grand plan is necessary for the people to reach a broad consensus."
Kim also clearly stated that this plan is a kind of reflection on the previous Moon Jae-in administration. He said, "The Moon Jae-in government started not as a broad candlelight coalition government but only as a Democratic Party government, so it was later criticized for not achieving significant results," and added, "(This coalition proposal) is our reflection."
When asked whether the broad coalition could include People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo or former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min, he said, "It is difficult to mention individuals."
Kim expressed regret over the situation divided into pro-progressive and pro-conservative camps during the impeachment political turmoil against President Yoon. He said, "Our political landscape is 51 to 49, meaning there is still a tense political tension between those considered pro-conservative and those considered pro-progressive," adding, "At this opportunity, the forces that emphasized not crossing the river of impeachment were probably ready for a clear break by the people, but after the impeachment motion, the Democratic Party failed to meet the public’s expectations for national stability and economic recovery, which gave an opportunity for those with conservative views to unite," criticizing the situation. Regarding the impeachment of Acting Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, he said, "I think the Democratic Party acted too hastily."
Regarding his potential presidential run, he took a cautious stance. About President Yoon’s impeachment trial, he explained, "Supporters feel uncomfortable talking about the presidential election because there is no assurance that it will be properly resolved according to the constitutional and legal order."
