US Restores Cuba Economic Sanctions... Biden Reverses Removal from Terror Sponsor List

On the 31st (local time), U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio announced in a statement that he had approved the reissuance of the Cuba sanctions list. The list prohibits certain transactions with companies controlled by or acting on behalf of the Cuban military, intelligence agencies, security agencies, or personnel. The company 'Orbit S.A.,' which processes remittance transactions on behalf of the Cuban military, was also added to the sanctions list.

Secretary Rubio stated, "The State Department is reissuing the Cuba restricted list to ensure that resources are not provided to the Cuban regime, which directly oppresses and surveils the Cuban people and controls most of the economy," adding, "We hold the Cuban regime accountable for oppressing its people and reject its malicious interference in the Americas and worldwide. We support the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the Cuban people and demand the release of all political prisoners unjustly detained."

The Biden administration removed Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism on the 14th of last month as part of negotiations mediated by the Catholic Church, in which Cuba agreed to release political prisoners.
