Hosted by Pohang City and organized by the Pohang Culture and Tourism Association (President Kim Do-jun), this event was held for the second time following last year as part of the Pohang experience program for resident foreigners, with cultural tourism guides and volunteer interpreters also participating.
This year, in conjunction with the ‘Lunar New Year K-Traditional Games Experience Event,’ a fam tour was conducted for resident foreigners and famous foreign influencers in Pohang, providing an opportunity to promote the charm of Pohang’s attractions that visitors want to keep coming back to.
Held around Pohang’s Songdo Beach, despite being the last day of the Lunar New Year holiday, the event was bustling with foreign participants, mainly foreign students residing in the area, and domestic tourists, sharing a rich festive atmosphere and joy.
Especially with the recent airing of the popular drama ‘Squid Game’ Season 2, global interest in Korean traditional games has increased. The event, parodying Squid Game, sparked interest among foreigners experiencing Korean traditional games for the first time, who enjoyed the experience event.
In addition to traditional games, the event included traditional food experiences and a fam tour where participants wore hanbok and visited Pohang’s representative tourist spots such as Space Walk, Homigot, and Guryongpo Japanese House Street, promoting Pohang’s charm and focusing on tourism content that many foreign tourists want to visit.
A foreign student who participated in the event said, “Before coming to Korea, I had many opportunities to experience modern Korean culture like K-pop and Korean cuisine, but this is the first time I have directly enjoyed Korean traditional game culture,” adding, “It will be a joyful memory during my stay in Korea.”
On this day, alongside the main event, the K-Traditional Games Experience Zone (Squid Game theme) was operated, and various side events such as making New Year’s hope toppers, kite flying, dalgona candy experience, and hanbok experience were also prepared.
Additionally, Pohang City promoted major local tourist attractions centered around the 12 scenic spots of Pohang, recommended tourist destinations tailored to each participant’s personality type (MBTI), and held SNS events such as Pohang photo booths and traditional game experience certifications, attracting attention as Pohang rises as a popular tourist destination through recent media exposure.
A foreign influencer visiting Pohang for the first time on the fam tour said, “It was meaningful to visit Pohang during the long Lunar New Year holiday, wear hanbok, and experience Korea’s traditional holiday culture,” adding, “I also enjoyed visiting Pohang’s representative tourist spots and receiving personalized tourist recommendations based on my MBTI.”
Yoon Cheon-su, Director of the Tourism Industry Division of Pohang City, said, “This event not only provided resident foreigners with an opportunity to learn about Korean traditional culture but also became a place of exchange where Koreans and foreigners overcame cultural barriers to understand and communicate with each other,” adding, “We will continue to plan various events that allow foreigners to experience and promote the charm of Pohang as a global tourist city.”
