Attending the OpenAI Developer Workshop
Meeting to Strengthen AI Collaboration with Samsung Electronics
Amid Competition with DeepSeek
Planned Discussions with the Korean Semiconductor Industry
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is scheduled to visit South Korea this week to meet with top executives of Samsung Electronics.
As Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has recently been making waves in the U.S. tech industry, global AI industry attention is focused on Altman’s visit to Korea and his meeting with Samsung Electronics, a direct competitor to DeepSeek.
According to the electronics and IT industry on the 3rd, CEO Altman will visit Korea to attend the 'Builder Lab,' the first OpenAI developer workshop held in Korea, on the 4th.
This event is the first hosted by OpenAI in Korea, and domestic AI developers and corporate representatives are expected to attend. Altman’s visit is anticipated to accelerate the establishment of OpenAI’s Korean subsidiary.
It is reported that during his short schedule, Altman will seek to meet with Samsung Electronics’ top executives. A senior Samsung Electronics official stated that the specific schedule is confidential.
OpenAI and Samsung Electronics have recently been strengthening cooperation in various fields such as home appliances, smartphones, and semiconductors. Samsung Electronics has developed AI-enhanced smart TVs in collaboration with OpenAI and is discussing integrating AI features like ChatGPT into Galaxy smartphones.
Through this cooperation, Samsung Electronics is expected to lead innovative technologies based on smart homes and AI.
In particular, as the $700 trillion AI project Stargate, in which CEO Altman is involved, is being actively promoted at the U.S. government level, in-depth discussions with Korean semiconductor companies are expected. This project will not only enable various technological innovations related to AI but also serve as a crucial turning point to secure a competitive edge in the global market.
Additionally, expectations are rising regarding the growing importance of cooperation with Korean semiconductor companies to respond to the R1 introduced by Chinese company DeepSeek. DeepSeek’s AI technology is rapidly spreading in the market, and global semiconductor companies like Samsung Electronics need to collaborate more closely to respond effectively.
Meanwhile, CEO Altman visited Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek campus in January last year, touring the semiconductor production line and meeting with then-President Kyung Kye-hyun of Samsung Electronics. This visit is expected to further solidify the cooperation between Samsung Electronics and OpenAI.
