Daegu Mayor Hong Joonpyo stated on his social networking service (SNS) Facebook page on January 30, "One instance of collective madness determining the future of our country, as seen during the impeachment of Park Geunhye, is enough."
He said, "The previous day, I participated in a live, 100-minute debate on the current political situation with former Minister Yoo Si-min, responding to questions from MBC's Sohn Sukhee. There were aspects that the public misunderstood, and there were also things we did wrong. I made an honest effort to acknowledge our mistakes and to clarify any misunderstandings held by the public."
Mayor Hong added, "For the people, the past three years spent in futile conflict-like the story of Banghyuljijaeng-must feel like a waste. To move toward a greater Republic of Korea, we must take this situation as a lesson." Banghyuljijaeng is a Korean idiom meaning "when a snipe and a clam fight, both are caught by the fisherman," referring to the idea that when two sides fight, a third party ultimately benefits.
