Current Pilot Suggests Causes Such as "Auxiliary Battery, Smoking"
Police to Separately Investigate Possible Terrorism or Anti-State Activities
The police have launched an investigation into the Air Busan passenger plane fire that occurred at Gimhae Airport on the 28th.
According to the police on the 29th, the Criminal Mobile Unit of the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency has reportedly begun investigating the Air Busan passenger plane fire incident at Gimhae Airport.
The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency plans to decide on the composition, personnel, and scale of the investigation headquarters following a joint forensic examination scheduled for 10 a.m. on the 30th.
The cause of the fire is being jointly investigated by the fire authorities and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board (ARAIB), while the police will separately verify whether the airline is liable for professional negligence causing injury.
The police will inspect baggage regulations and also check for issues related to the aircraft’s electrical power systems to determine any negligence.
Regarding the cause of the fire, a current pilot speculated on his SNS that "it does not appear that the fire started from the aircraft’s Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)," and suggested that the fire may have originated from carry-on items such as an auxiliary battery or an electronic cigarette vaporizer inside a shelf, or from smoking in the restroom, or an electrical short circuit in the overhead cabin wiring.
Since the fire occurred at Gimhae Airport, a military airport, and involved a large-scale potential casualty incident, the police are also reportedly checking for any signs of terrorism or anti-state activities.
