Woori Bank Survey: 8 Out of 10 Teenagers Manage Their Own Holiday Money
Convenience Stores Are the Top Spot for Teenagers' Holiday Spending

A survey found that 8 out of 10 teenagers manage their own holiday money, such as New Year's money.


According to the "Youth Lifestyle Report" published by Woori Bank, 81.8% of teenagers manage their holiday money themselves. This survey was conducted via email or mobile among 3,729 teenagers aged 14 to 18.


It was found that 18.2% of parents manage the holiday money. Among the teenagers whose parents manage the money, 54.8% responded that they could get it back later, while 29.4% said they would not be able to get it back.


In fact, according to KakaoBank on the 29th, the deposit amount for the youth-targeted service "KakaoBank Mini" on Lunar New Year's Day last year (February 10, 2023) increased about 3.6 times compared to the same day of the week a week earlier. The number of new customers also increased more than 3.2 times during the same period.

KakaoBank Mini is a prepaid electronic payment method exclusively for teenagers aged 7 to 18.


The increase was also notable when expanding the period to the Lunar New Year holiday. During the Lunar New Year holiday last year (February 9?12, 2023), the deposit amount increased by about 233% compared to the same period the previous week. The number of new customers also rose by 236%.


K Bank's youth service "Hiteen" also saw daily deposits increase about threefold compared to the previous week during the first three days of the Lunar New Year holiday last year.


The place where teenagers spent the most pocket money during the Lunar New Year holiday was convenience stores. It was found that teenagers mainly made payments at convenience stores and clothing stores through KakaoBank Mini during the Lunar New Year holiday last year.


Based on the number of transactions, convenience stores were the most used, followed by PC rooms/game rooms, gift certificate purchases, cafes, and clothing stores. Based on payment amounts, the order was clothing stores, social commerce, delivery apps, convenience stores, and PC rooms/game rooms.
