On the 27th (local time), CNN reported that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order banning the enlistment of transgender individuals. Trump will also sign an executive order prohibiting DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies within the military. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has argued that DEI policies weaken the military, plans to review all DEI practices in the armed forces. According to the Palm Center, an organization researching sexual minorities in the military, the number of transgender personnel in the U.S. military was estimated at 14,000 in 2018.

President Trump banned transgender individuals from serving in the military during his first term in 2017, but this was reversed in 2021 when Joe Biden took office. However, Trump rescinded Biden’s executive order shortly after his second inauguration.

DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Biden, who promoted DEI policies aimed at supporting marginalized races, genders, and classes, won overwhelming support from people of color. However, President Trump claimed that DEI policies constitute reverse discrimination against white people and men, which helped him secure re-election.

In response to Trump’s actions, leading American corporations are announcing the abolition of DEI policies one after another. On the 10th, Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Meta, hinted at the possibility of scrapping DEI during an interview with pro-Trump popular podcaster Joe Rogan, saying, “Saying we want to welcome everyone and create a good environment is a different matter from basically saying ‘masculinity is bad.’” Walt Disney decided to remove a transgender character originally planned to appear in the upcoming youth animated series “Win or Lose,” produced by its subsidiary Pixar Studios.
