The Gwangju branch of the Korea Veterans Missionary Group (Branch Director Kim Naehong) visited the Gwangju Koryoin Village ahead of the nation's biggest holiday, Seollal, to deliver a donation and encourage the migrant compatriots in Gwangju.
According to Koryoin Village on the 27th, the Korea Veterans Missionary Group is a non-profit incorporated association established in 1968. It is mainly composed of pastors and elders who are disabled veterans, and the organization supports national merit recipients and their families by encouraging rehabilitation and self-reliance through Christian faith and continues missionary work that puts the spirit of patriotism and love for the nation into practice.
Five people attended the event, including Gwangju branch director Pastor Kim Naehong, Secretary General Elder Choi Kangul, Gwangju Veterans Hospital Church Chaplain Han Minhui, Gwangju Yeeun Church Senior Pastor Gong Dongyeong, and Pastor Jin Hongrae. Most of them are national merit recipients who were injured while serving in the Vietnam War or defending the country against the North Korean Communist invasion, and are currently living in the Gwangju area while engaging in pastoral activities.
The group held a meeting with Koryoin Village representative Shin Joya and village leaders, listening to the settlement status and challenges faced by the Koryoin compatriots. After the meeting, they delivered the donation and expressed their sincere hope that the Koryoin compatriots would become established members of the local community.
Branch Director Kim Naehong said, "Koryoin compatriots are a part of Korean history and our people, and everyone should take an interest and work together to ensure their stable settlement and improved quality of life."
Shin Joya, representative of Koryoin Village, said, "I express my deep gratitude for the warm interest and support of the Veterans Missionary Group ahead of Seollal," and added, "Such sharing and encouragement will be a great source of strength for the Koryoin compatriots."
Meanwhile, Koryoin Village is a community of Koryoin who settled in Gwangju after entering Korea in search of a new home following the dissolution of the former Soviet Union. They are descendants of Koryoin who were forcibly relocated to Central Asia by the treacherous Communist Stalin in 1937.
