Hong Jun-pyo: "Yoon and Lee Neglected State Affairs for Two and a Half Years... People's Lives Have Been Devastated"

Hong Jun-pyo: "Yoon and Lee Neglected State Affairs for Two and a Half Years... People's Lives Have Been Devastated" Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu Metropolitan City. Provided by Daegu City

Hong Jun-pyo, Mayor of Daegu Metropolitan City, expressed the view that in the event of an early presidential election amid the ongoing impeachment trial of President Yoon Seok-yeol, a power change frame is preferable to a regime change frame.

On the 27th, Mayor Hong said this on his Facebook, stating, "After the narrow victory in the last presidential election, President Yoon and Lee Jae-myung (leader of the Democratic Party) have spent two and a half years in a 'Banghyojijang' (蚌鷸之爭) conflict, neglecting national affairs, which has led to the worsening of citizens' livelihoods. As a result, we are now facing a severe international situation known as 'Trump 2.0,' along with the Ukraine international war, the Israel war, and the heightened North Korean nuclear threat." The term Banghyojijang literally means a dispute between a clam and a sandpiper, describing a situation where two parties fiercely fight and a third party benefits. It is similar to the Korean proverb Eobujiri (漁夫之利).

Mayor Hong continued, "The country is in crisis both internally and externally, yet it is regrettable that we are still wasting time on internal conflicts." However, he added, "I am confident that our people will wisely overcome this period of confusion as always." He went on to say, "Only by resolving the current adversarial symbiotic relationship between the ruling and opposition parties can we welcome a new era," adding, "The beneficiaries who end the Banghyojijang conflict are precisely our people."
