As fine dust levels have been intensifying recently and frequent occurrences of high concentrations of fine dust are expected until March, Gwangju City has urged citizens to participate in efforts to reduce fine dust.
On the 27th, Gwangju City announced that, together with related organizations located in the Gwangju area, such as the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office, Honam Regional Air Environment Research Institute, and Gwangju Green Environment Support Center, it recently conducted the “6th Fine Dust Seasonal Management System Awareness Campaign” in the area around Gwangju Songjeong Station.
This campaign was organized to encourage “citizen participation in reducing fine dust in daily life” in preparation for the occurrence of high concentrations of fine dust during winter.
On this day, the city promoted the nationwide fine dust seasonal management system to citizens through leaflets, hand signs, and banners. The fine dust seasonal management system is a policy implemented to reduce fine dust concentrations during the winter, when levels are typically high.
The 6th Fine Dust Seasonal Management System will implement 19 tasks in three main areas: reduction and management of core sources of fine dust emissions (transportation, industry, power generation), intensive management of public spaces, and prediction and proactive response. Specific measures include restrictions on operation of grade 5 vehicles, reduction of coal power plant operations, intensive management of air quality in multi-use facilities, prevention of illegal burning in rural areas, expansion of fine dust information provision, and encouraging public participation in daily life.
Previously, in November of last year, the city established a detailed implementation plan for the 6th Fine Dust Seasonal Management System and took the lead in restricting grade 5 vehicle operations at public institutions. Moving forward, the city plans to conduct a joint campaign with autonomous districts in March, when fine dust concentrations are highest during the seasonal management period.
Na Byungchun, Director of Climate and Air Policy, said, “We will do our best to implement the 6th Fine Dust Seasonal Management System to reduce fine dust that threatens citizens’ health,” and added, “To protect a blue sky free from concerns about fine dust, we hope citizens will join in daily practices such as walking short distances, reducing waste generation and incineration, and turning off unnecessary power.”
