As Chinese tourists visiting Thailand have been repeatedly kidnapped, causing a growing uproar, it has been revealed that a Thai police officer was arrested after kidnapping Chinese nationals and demanding ransom. Concerns are rising about Thailand's public security, especially since an active police officer was involved.
According to local media such as the Bangkok Post on the 26th (local time), Thai police arrested eight people, including four police officers and one military patrol member.
They are accused of kidnapping seven Chinese nationals on the 23rd in Ubon Ratchathani Province in eastern Thailand, near the border with Laos, and demanding 2 million baht (approximately 85 million KRW) from the victims' families.
The kidnapping victims used messenger apps to inform their families about the abduction and the location of the resort where they were held. After receiving reports from the victims' families, Thai police raided the resort and rescued them. The four police officers were immediately dismissed.
As incidents of Chinese tourists being kidnapped and taken to Myanmar, Cambodia, and other places have continued recently in Thailand, concerns about public security within the country are increasing. Earlier this month, Chinese actor Wang Xing went missing in Thailand but was found in Myanmar after three days and returned home.
On the 24th, Thai police decided to respond jointly with Chinese public security and established a coordination center within the Royal Thai Police Headquarters for this purpose.
