City and Urban Corporation to Distribute 6,500 Fresh Flowers
During the Lunar New Year holiday, the bringing of plastic artificial flowers will be restricted at Mangwol Cemetery Park and Yeongnak Park.
Gwangju City and Gwangju Urban Corporation will distribute fresh flowers at Mangwol Cemetery Park and Yeongnak Park during the holiday, promoting the "Eco-friendly Memorial Park Without Plastic Artificial Flowers" campaign.
Mangwol Cemetery Park will distribute a total of 6,500 fresh flowers free of charge to visitors from January 25 to 27, and Yeongnak Park from January 28 to 30, starting at 10 a.m. until supplies last.
Plastic artificial flowers are made of mixed materials such as plastic and metal, making them difficult to recycle. When exposed to sunlight for long periods, they break down into microplastics, causing environmental pollution. In addition, incinerating or burying them emits carbon, adding further burden to the environment.
Accordingly, the city is launching the "Eco-friendly Memorial Park Without Plastic Artificial Flowers" campaign. Along with the distribution of fresh flowers, the bringing of plastic artificial flowers into Mangwol Cemetery Park and Yeongnak Park will be restricted. However, artificial flowers made from eco-friendly materials such as fresh flowers or paper will be allowed.
Jung Mikyung, head of the Resource Circulation Division, said, "For a sustainable memorial culture, it is important to start with ourselves and take small actions to protect the environment. We ask everyone to join in creating eco-friendly memorial parks by using fresh flowers instead of plastic artificial ones."
