Movies, Dramas, and Variety Shows to Enjoy with Family
We introduce online video service (OTT) content perfect for enjoying during the Lunar New Year holiday. The selection ranges from survival variety shows to romance dramas. For those who struggle to decide what to watch and end up watching nothing, here is a curated list.
Netflix has made a movie of the nostalgic 'Wallace and Gromit,' which turns 35 this year. This animated film was created by molding characters with special clay and producing each frame as a video. It tells the story of Wallace, an eccentric inventor who loves cheese, and his smart dog Gromit, well known in Korea through TV series and short films.
"Trauma Center" is an 8-episode Netflix series depicting the story of a trauma surgeon who used to work on battlefields joining a severe trauma team. The genius surgeon Baek Kang-hyuk, played by actor Ju Ji-hoon, reminds viewers of Lee Guk-jong, the director of the Armed Forces Daejeon Hospital who led the trauma center at Ajou University. The series also stars actors Chu Young-woo, Yoon Kyung-ho, and Jung Jae-kwang, who recently gained attention through the drama "Okssi Buin Jeon."
"Blood Game" Season 3 is a Wave variety show where legendary survival stars such as broadcaster Jang Dong-min, Hong Jin-ho, and YouTubers Ppanibottle, Chungju Man, and poker player Steve Ye compete for a prize of 100 million won. The competition is divided into mansion, paradise, and ruins. This season impresses with its larger scale and more diverse money challenges. The deathmatches that appear in each episode, played out among family members, add a unique twist.
"Love Siblings" imagines what it would be like to closely watch siblings dating. This daring concept is featured in a Wave variety show. Several siblings gather in one house, hiding their identities as they each seek their own lover. While it appears to be a romance show on the surface, it highlights intense family love and growth. The warm story unfolds about siblings who grew up receiving abundant parental love and those who have relied on each other like parents.
PD Lee Wook-jung, who has directed cooking documentaries, has expanded into areas of companion dogs, alcohol, and education. "Long Live the Dog" is a Wave documentary that tells heartwarming companion dog stories through various cases from Korea, the U.S., Japan, and Europe. "Human Chronicle - Hospital" captures moments of life and death occurring in hospitals, and "Drops of God" explores the harmony of alcohol and cuisine, including wine, sake, and beer, as well as the world of brewing.
Tving presents "Wongyeong: The Bond of Dano," a prequel to the hit tvN drama "Wongyeong." It is a romance between Wongyeong (played by Cha Ju-young) and Yi Bang-won (played by Lee Hyun-wook), who shared the same dream before ascending the throne. Their beautiful love story unfolds as they recognize each other at first sight. Unlike the love-hate couple narrative depicted in the main series, this prequel is filled with the fresh emotions of first love.
