Samsung's First XR Device 'Muhan'... Next Up, Smart Glasses?

Samsung Electronics has officially announced plans to release the extended reality (XR) headset 'Muhan' within this year, and the next-generation smart device is expected to be smart glasses.

At the XR press briefing held on the 22nd (local time) at the Westin Hotel in San Jose, USA, Kim Ki-hwan, Vice President and Head of the Immersive Solution Development Team at Samsung Electronics MX Division, stated, "Smart glasses are also one of the options the company is considering," adding, "Among them, we plan to decide on the direction that is most comfortable for users to use."

This can be interpreted as Samsung Electronics opening the possibility of developing smart glasses alongside the XR headset. On the same day, at Galaxy Unpacked 2025, Samsung included smart glasses when introducing AI-based devices.

At the briefing, attendees were able to directly touch and try on a prototype of the XR headset 'Muhan.' However, it could not be used as it was not powered on. When tried on, it felt lighter than Apple's Vision Pro and similar in weight to Meta's Meta Quest 3S. The Vision Pro weighs between 600g and 650g, while the Meta Quest 3S weighs 513g.

What is unique is that unlike Apple and Meta's products, which are closed off like large goggles from top to bottom, Muhan has an open bottom. The support lost at the bottom is compensated by a forehead support. Turning the dial at the back of the head to the right adjusts the headset to fit the head circumference. A Samsung Electronics official said, "If desired, accessories can be added below the eyes to cover that area," adding, "Because some users prefer the bottom to be open and well-ventilated, we provided this option." He continued, "Since the forehead contact area is small, we thought supporting the forehead would be better for wearing comfort."

Vice President Kim explained the reason for introducing Muhan as the first XR device, saying, "Because it can provide the richest user experience with cutting-edge technology." The Android XR platform to be applied to XR devices is being developed in collaboration with Google. This platform will be used not only for Muhan but also for other types of devices such as smart glasses.
