Reaffirmation of Defense Commitment
and Request to Maintain Combined Defense Posture
Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul met with newly appointed Commander of United States Forces Korea (USFK), General Jay B. Brunson, who concurrently serves as Commander of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command and United Nations Command, on the 22nd to exchange views on the ROK-U.S. alliance and North Korean issues.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Cho met with General Brunson at the Ministry’s office in Seoul and urged him, as the USFK Commander, to contribute to maintaining and strengthening the ironclad ROK-U.S. alliance and robust combined defense posture.
He also requested the Commander’s role in ensuring that the alliance’s cooperative achievements, such as extended deterrence and ROK-U.S.-Japan cooperation, continue to be implemented through close coordination between the two countries.
General Brunson reaffirmed the United States’ defense commitment to the Republic of Korea and stated that a strong ROK-U.S. combined defense posture will be maintained through realistic joint exercises.
He also emphasized the importance of sustaining the momentum of ROK-U.S. and ROK-U.S.-Japan training and its contribution to regional stability.
Minister Cho and General Brunson exchanged views on the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, recognizing that the current security environment on the Peninsula is more severe than ever, and agreed to strengthen continuous communication and cooperation to maintain a strong ROK-U.S. alliance and combined defense posture.
