Daejeon Police Arrest 35 Delivery Riders for Insurance Fraud and Illegally Receiving Sickness Benefits

Fraudulently Receiving Over 203 Million Won by Manipulating Circumstances of Traffic Accidents

Daejeon Police Arrest 35 Delivery Riders for Insurance Fraud and Illegally Receiving Sickness Benefits

A large number of delivery riders have been apprehended by the police for fraudulently claiming insurance benefits by disguising motorcycle accidents that occurred during delivery work as if they happened during commuting.

The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it had arrested 35 individuals who illegally received approximately 203 million won in insurance payouts and compensation for leave and medical treatment by manipulating the circumstances of motorcycle traffic accidents (injuries) from January 2021 to July last year.

These individuals are accused of working as delivery riders in the Daejeon and Chungcheong regions, subscribing to relatively inexpensive household (non-transport) insurance, and then, when a traffic accident occurred during delivery work, deceiving insurers by claiming the accident happened during commuting in order to fraudulently obtain insurance payouts.

It was also found that after traffic accidents during delivery, they continued working as delivery riders but falsely claimed they were unable to work due to the accident to receive compensation for leave, or in cases of gross negligence?which are excluded from coverage for work-related injuries?they disguised the accidents as having occurred during daily life to receive medical compensation.

The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency detected these traffic-related insurance fraud cases in cooperation with the Daejeon Regional Headquarters of the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service.

A representative from the Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "We will make every effort to eradicate insurance fraud, which undermines the purpose of the insurance system and shifts the burden onto the majority of honest citizens, through close cooperation with related agencies."
