OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank Launch "Stargate" Joint Venture
Up to $500 Billion Investment Announced at the White House
First Data Center to Be Built in Texas, Expansion Planned Nationwide
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the 21st (local time) that OpenAI, Oracle, and Japan's SoftBank will invest up to $500 billion (approximately 718 trillion KRW) to establish AI data centers in the United States.
President Trump announced this new private sector AI investment plan at the White House on the same day. The event was attended by Masayoshi Son, Chairman of SoftBank; Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI; and Larry Ellison, Chairman of Oracle.
President Trump stated, "This is the largest AI infrastructure project in U.S. history to date."
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank will establish a joint venture called "Stargate." According to the White House, Stargate will build its first data center in Texas and then expand to other states. These companies are reported to initially invest $100 billion (approximately 144 trillion KRW) and expand their investment up to $500 billion over the next four years.
With President Trump hinting at easing AI regulations, companies are also enthusiastically opening their "investment purses," aligning with the pro-AI approach of Trump's second term.
Earlier, President Trump had predicted deregulation, arguing that AI regulations hinder technological innovation since his candidacy. On the day before his inauguration, he revoked the executive order on "Safe and Trustworthy AI Development and Utilization." This executive order, which focused on AI regulations, was introduced by the previous Joe Biden administration and came into effect in October 2023.
