A pedestrian overpass featuring the 'Hangeul Creation Monument' as its main tower will be constructed at Giheung Reservoir in Yongin City, one of the three largest reservoirs in Gyeonggi Province.

Yongin City announced on the 22nd that, as a result of the design competition for the Giheung Reservoir pedestrian overpass, the joint submission by Kyungho Engineering Co., Ltd. and Kangho Engineering Co., Ltd., titled 'Ido (Sejong), Waterway Bridge,' was selected as the winning design.

Previously, the city decided to install a pedestrian overpass with a width of 2 meters and a length of 590 meters, stretching from the rowing stadium on the east side of Giheung Reservoir to the west side towards Kyung Hee University, and began the design competition in September of last year.

The winning design, 'Ido (Sejong), Waterway Bridge,' is based on the historical record in the Annals of King Sejong that King Sejong stayed by the Singal Stream before the proclamation of the creation of Hangeul. The design places the 'Hangeul Creation Monument' at the center and applies a cable-stayed bridge method to support part of the bridge. The remaining sections are designed as a composite bridge with an S-shaped connecting bridge.

In particular, the design incorporates nighttime landscape lighting such as media glass and plans spaces for citizens' rest, viewing, and events, providing a new pedestrian environment and attractions.

The city plans to proceed with basic and detailed design services based on the winning design, start construction within this year, and aims to complete the project by 2027.

Giheung Reservoir covers a total area of 2.5 square kilometers, making it the third largest reservoir in Gyeonggi Province. Originally intended for agricultural water supply, its use has declined due to urbanization, and it is currently utilized as a walking trail. With the new pedestrian overpass, the convenience of using the approximately 10-kilometer circular walking trail, which previously required detouring past Hagalkyo Intersection, is expected to improve.

A city official stated, "We will promptly proceed with construction based on the winning design to transform Giheung Reservoir into a unique leisure space for citizens and make it a landmark of the city."
