Increase in Lunar New Year Short-Term Part-Time Job Listings
Special Holiday Jobs Such as Jeon Frying and Gift Set Packaging Also in High Demand
This year, the demand for part-time jobs during the Lunar New Year holiday period has significantly increased. Many self-employed business owners are looking for short-term part-time workers to cope with the shortage of labor during the long holiday, and the number of part-time workers who prefer to work instead of going to their hometowns during the holiday has also risen. Part-time job platforms connecting these parties are enjoying a 'Lunar New Year labor' boom.
On the 22nd, local community platform Danggeun announced that among the short-term part-time job postings on its own job platform 'Danggeun Alba' over the past week, 27% were seeking workers for the Lunar New Year holiday period. Job postings such as 'Looking for short-term part-time workers for Lunar New Year holiday' and 'Part-time job from January 25 to 30 for Lunar New Year' are rapidly appearing on Danggeun Alba. Especially, the food and distribution industries are actively recruiting part-time workers due to the Lunar New Year demand. Danggeun analyzed that many of the Lunar New Year part-time job postings are for additional staff to prepare for the influx of customers during the holiday or to find replacements for existing staff absences. In particular, job postings for fruit gift set packaging and gift set sales in department stores have been appearing continuously from one to two weeks before the Lunar New Year holiday.
Unusual holiday jobs are also attracting attention. Examples include 'Jeon frying part-time job' and 'Hangwa making part-time job.' Many job postings seek short-term part-time workers specifically for Lunar New Year at businesses that make essential foods for the ancestral rites table. During the Lunar New Year holiday, those who have to leave their homes to visit their hometowns or travel have also posted job openings for pet care.
Part-time workers prefer to earn even a little more rather than rest during the holiday. When Alba Heaven, a part-time job portal, recently asked 585 part-time workers about their 'Lunar New Year holiday work plans,' 66.5% answered that they would work during the holiday. Among part-time workers in the distribution and sales sectors, 78.4% said they would not take a break during the Lunar New Year holiday, recording the highest rate. Additionally, most part-time workers in the food service and beverage (74.9%), service (74.4%), and driving and delivery (72.2%) sectors were found to continue working during the holiday.
Furthermore, new job seekers looking for short-term part-time work were also identified. Among Alba Heaven’s individual members aged from teens to over 50 who are currently not working part-time, 270 said they plan to work part-time during the Lunar New Year holiday. Of these, 54.4% said it was for 'short-term pocket money earning.' The average desired hourly wage for those seeking short-term Lunar New Year part-time jobs was 12,591 KRW. According to last year’s survey by Albamon, those planning short-term part-time work during the Lunar New Year expected to work for two days and earn about 280,000 KRW.
An industry official said, "As the largest holiday in Korea, the Lunar New Year is approaching, and short-term part-time job recruitment and job seeking are actively taking place. Since fixed costs increase due to requirements such as providing weekly holiday pay when hiring for more than 15 hours per week, the proportion of such short-term part-time jobs during holidays in the job market is expected to gradually increase."
