DH Autoware "Subsidiary Accelerates Commercialization of Next-Generation Autonomous Driving Sensors... Dramatic Reduction in Number of Cameras"

DH Autoware, a specialized automotive electronics company, announced on the 21st that its wholly-owned subsidiary DH Auto AI is developing variable-focus-based object recognition technology for autonomous vehicles. Variable-focus technology is a next-generation technology that can replace multiple cameras currently used in autonomous vehicles.

DH Auto AI is developing variable-focus compatible object recognition software (SW) and designing and implementing performance verification scenarios through the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s autonomous driving technology development innovation project. This national project is led by Ajin Industrial, with participation from the Korea Electronics Technology Institute and several automotive electronics companies, and will continue until the end of next year.

After developing variable-focus camera technology, DH Auto AI plans to supply products to global autonomous driving companies. Currently commercialized autonomous vehicles use multiple cameras to collect image data at various focal lengths. By applying variable-focus technology, a single camera can perform the role of multiple cameras, simplifying the autonomous driving system while enabling more precise object recognition.

A company representative stated, “Applying variable-focus cameras maximizes the accuracy of near and far object recognition in autonomous driving systems and can also respond to low-visibility weather conditions. Through this national project, we will commercialize variable-focus camera recognition technology and supply products for next-generation autonomous vehicle development.”

He added, “Based on camera-based recognition technology, we will continue ongoing research and development to become a core company in the global autonomous driving value chain.”

DH Auto AI has been accumulating high-performance image-based perception sensor technology through various autonomous driving national projects. It possesses deep learning-based △lane and road boundary recognition technology △vehicle and pedestrian detection technology △object detection technology using stereo cameras, and is promoting the supply of autonomous driving sensor products to leading domestic automakers.
