Donald Trump Inaugurated as 47th U.S. President
"America's Interests First... Revolution of Common Sense Begins"
Executive Orders on Deporting Illegal Immigrants and Fossil Fuel Drilling Announced
"The golden age of America begins now."
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, who made a spectacular return to the White House after four years, declared the dawn of the 'MAGA (Make America Great Again)' era by emphasizing "America First" as his inaugural message. Through simultaneous executive orders focusing on deporting illegal immigrants, fossil fuel drilling, abolishing mandatory electric vehicle policies, and imposing tariffs, he expressed his intention to start the "complete recovery of America" and a "revolution of common sense." From his first day in office, President Trump launched a massive "Biden erasure" campaign and, through the MAGA declaration, heralded the revival of a stronger America First policy than during his first term.
On the 20th (local time), at the inauguration ceremony held in the Rotunda Hall of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C., President Trump began his inaugural speech by saying, "The golden age of America begins now," and simply stated, "I will put America first."
The keyword running through President Trump's 29-minute inaugural speech was America First, just as it was during his first administration. He stated, "Through a series of historic executive orders, we will begin the complete recovery of America and a revolution of common sense."
First, he announced the deportation of illegal immigrants, a promise he made several times during his candidacy. In his inaugural speech, President Trump said, "First, I will declare a national emergency at the southern border," adding, "All illegal entries will be immediately stopped, and the process of sending millions of foreign criminals back to where they came from will begin." He continued, "We will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country," and explained, "We will designate cartels as foreign terrorist organizations." He also announced the reinstatement of the Mexico Stay Policy, which detains illegal entrants and bans their entry into the U.S. until immigrants obtain legal status.
He also confirmed the policy of imposing tariffs. President Trump said, "To protect American workers and families, we will immediately review the trade system," and added, "Instead of taxing Americans to enrich other countries, we will impose tariffs and taxes on foreign countries to enrich Americans." He announced the establishment of a "Foreign Revenue Agency" to collect tariffs from foreign companies.
President Trump also stated his intention to regain control of the Panama Canal. He said, "We did not hand over the Panama Canal to China, but now China is operating it," and added, "We will take it back." He also said he would sign an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "America Gulf."
The "Biden erasure" was also evident throughout the inaugural speech.
President Trump declared the end of the Green New Deal, an environmental industrial policy that included incentives for electric vehicles, which was driven by former President Biden. He also announced the abolition of the mandatory electric vehicle policy.
Instead, he pledged to declare a national energy emergency to expand drilling and production of fossil fuels, including oil. President Trump said, "The inflation crisis was caused by excessive energy consumption and soaring prices," and revived the slogan "drill, baby, drill," which signifies increased fossil fuel production.
He also announced his intention to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement again. President Trump had withdrawn from this agreement during his first term, and after President Biden rejoined, he now declared a re-withdrawal.
To reduce inflation, he said he would instruct officials in his second administration to mobilize all their powers.
Additionally, President Trump announced, "From today, the official policy of the U.S. government recognizes only two genders, male and female," signaling a crackdown on 'woke' culture (a term mocking progressivism).
President Trump referenced narrowly escaping an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania last July, emphasizing, "This is to make America great again," and stressed, "I will put America's interests first."
In his inaugural speech, President Trump devoted significant attention to explaining the policy priorities of his second administration and the executive orders to implement them. This was seen as a departure from the divisive and hateful rhetoric of his first inauguration speech eight years ago in January 2017.
Due to an Arctic cold wave, President Trump's inauguration ceremony was held indoors rather than outdoors. This was the first time a U.S. presidential inauguration was held indoors since President Ronald Reagan's second inauguration in 1985. About 800 seats were arranged in the Rotunda Hall where the ceremony took place. Attendees included President Trump's family, members of Congress, second administration cabinet members, and foreign diplomatic envoys. Big tech giants such as Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and his wife, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, and Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, were also present. Among foreign leaders, far-right leader Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, and Javier Milei, President of Argentina, participated unusually.
