Gwangju Transportation Corporation announced on the 20th that it recently awarded the 'Brave Citizen Award' to Jeon Daeseong (35), a citizen who witnessed a fire incident inside a subway station and immediately took action to extinguish it, preventing further damage.

On the evening of the 2nd at around 10:18 PM, Jeon, while returning home and waiting for a train at Geumnamno 4-ga Station in Dong-gu, saw smoke rising from a trash can on the platform. He quickly used a nearby fire extinguisher to put out the fire, preventing it from spreading.

While Jeon promptly took initial action, a station employee on night duty arrived at the scene, and the fire was completely extinguished within four minutes.

Notably, Geumnamno 4-ga Station, where the fire occurred, has high transportation demand and heavy foot traffic. Thanks to Jeon's calm and courageous response, a situation that could have led to further damage was brought under control at an early stage.

After receiving the 'Brave Citizen Award,' Jeon said, "The fire extinguisher training I learned beforehand was very helpful in putting out the fire. I believe anyone in my position would have acted the same way, so I am simply grateful to receive this award."

President Jo Ikmun encouraged Jeon, saying, "Thanks to Jeon Daeseong's voluntary and immediate response, a larger fire was prevented. His brave and righteous actions will serve as a great example for the citizens of Gwangju."

Meanwhile, the corporation plans to increase the frequency of daily station inspections and strengthen management of vulnerable areas to actively prevent recurrence and copycat crimes.
