Even if You Leave Your Child with Neighbors, You Can Receive 'Care Allowance'... Gyeonggi-do Provides Up to '600,000 Won per Month' Support

Gyeonggi Province will begin accepting applications for the ‘Gyeonggi-type Family Care Allowance’ starting February 3, which provides up to 600,000 KRW per month to grandparents or relatives within the fourth degree of kinship, or neighboring residents, who care for children aged 24 to 48 months.

The Gyeonggi-type Family Care Allowance is part of Gyeonggi Province’s flagship welfare policy series, ‘360° Always Care,’ and is an initiative that was implemented following discussions by the Population Talk Talk Committee in December 2023.

This year, Gyeonggi Province will select and support about 5,000 households experiencing childcare gaps in 18 cities and counties including Hwaseong, Anyang, Paju, Gwangju, Gwangmyeong, and Hanam.

The caregiver (father or mother) and the child (aged between 24 and under 48 months) must reside in the participating city or county according to their resident registration, and the household must be experiencing a childcare gap due to dual-income or other reasons. There are no income restrictions.

Care assistants who receive the care allowance, such as grandparents or relatives within the fourth degree of kinship, may reside in other local governments, but neighboring residents considered as social family must live in the same eup, myeon, or dong as the eligible child and must have been Gyeonggi residents living at the same address in the eup, myeon, or dong for over one year.

Once selected as a care assistant, before starting care activities, they must register as a member on the ‘Gyeonggi Lifelong Learning Portal (GSEEK)’ and complete mandatory education on child safety, child abuse prevention, and prevention of fraudulent claims.

Care must be provided for at least 40 hours per month. For one child, the allowance is 300,000 KRW per month; for two children, 450,000 KRW per month; and for three children, 600,000 KRW per month. For four or more children, restrictions apply so that two or more care assistants provide detailed care.

Applications must be submitted collectively on the ‘Gyeonggi Minwon24’ website by the caregiving parent (father or mother) with a power of attorney from the care assistant, between the 1st and 10th of each month (applications for the first month will be accepted starting February 3). For detailed inquiries, contact the local city or county community center or the Gyeonggi Call Center at 031-120.

Through this project, Gyeonggi Province expects to foster a social atmosphere that respects the social value of child-rearing, alleviate parental childcare burdens, and create a more stable childcare environment.

Yoon Young-mi, Director of the Women and Family Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, “The Family Care Allowance is a policy that supports reliable and practical care assistants for families experiencing childcare gaps due to dual-income or multiple children. We will continue to strive to reduce parental childcare burdens and fill the blind spots in child care to create an even better environment for raising children.”
